What is neem?

What it is

Neem is a tree that’s native to India and parts of Southeast Asia, but today it grows in many tropical and subtropical areas around the world. You’ve probably heard it called the miracle tree because nearly every part of it — leaves, seeds, bark, and oil — has been traditionally used for food, medicine, or gardening. It’s an unusual plant in that it’s both helpful and hardy.

How it looks

Neem is a medium-to-large evergreen tree that can reach around 15–20 m tall, with a wide, shady crown and green, pinnate leaves made up of many small leaflets. Each leaflet is about 2–3 cm long, giving the tree a feathery look. The bark is rough and dark brown, and the tree produces small white fragrant flowers in clusters during the dry season. These flowers turn into green fruit, which ripens to yellow and contains a single seed.

What it is used for

Neem has long been part of traditional medicine in India, where it’s used for a wide range of things:

Unlike many commercial products that use heavy chemicals, neem-based products are often chosen because they come from a plant and are perceived as gentler or more eco-friendly.

How to grow it

Neem trees are tough and adaptable. They can grow in poor soils, tolerate drought, and handle hot temperatures — which is why they do well in tropical and subtropical regions. Young neem trees usually need full sun and plenty of space, as they can grow quite large. Regular watering helps them get established, but once grown they’re pretty drought-resistant.

In cooler climates, neem doesn’t survive frost, so it’s mostly grown outdoors in warm regions or as a container plant in places with cold winters.
