What it is like
A shrub or small tree. It grows 9 m tall. It has an aniseed scent. The bark is grey-brown. The leaf buds are golden or rusty silky. Young leaves are red and hang down. The leaves are narrowly oblong and 8-30 cm long by 3-11 cm wide. The flowers occur singly in the axils of leaves or on old wood and the trunk. They are yellow. They have rusty silk hairs. The fruit are 3-6 cm long by 1.3-1.8 cm wide. They are bark blue-black when ripe. The seeds are pale brown.
