What it is like
A shrub. It grows 1-2 m tall. It has a rootstock that lasts from year to year and tufts of shoots develop from this. The branches are grey. They can have white dots. The leaves are narrowly oval and 2-10 cm long by 1-4 cm wide. They are rounded or wedge shapes at the base. They are hairy. The flowers are at the top. The flowers are white. The fruit are pale to dark brown and 11-33 cm long by 3-8 mm wide. The seeds are 8-14 mm long with a tuft of hairs at the tip.
The leaves are used to treat Leishmania. The pods are probably used against stomach worms.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows in clear forests on sandy soils. It can grow in mangrove swamps or savannahs. It grows from sea level to 400 m above sea level.
