What it is like

A medium sized evergreen tree. It grows to 15-20 m tall. The trunk is 30-40 cm across. The small branches are cylindrical and robust. The bark has cracks along it when it gets old. The leaves are simple and sword shaped with a sharp point. The leaves are 10-14 cm long and 3-5 cm wide. They are pale green on both surfaces. The flower occurs in the axils of leaves. The flowers are clustered in threes. The fruit is a berry about 1.5 cm long by 8 mm wide. They are pale white. There is one seed inside. The fruit is edible.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows in evergreen tropical monsoon forest. In Vietnam it is below 1000 m altitude. It needs plenty of light. It suits climates with wet and dry seasons. It can withstand drought due to deep roots and can re-grow after fire from roots.
