What it is like

An evergreen tree. It is medium sized growing 12-15 m tall. The trunk is 40-50 cm across. It has many branches. The leaves are alternate and narrowly oval. They are 3-5 cm long by 3-4 cm wide. The fruit is round and 1.5-1.8 cm across.

There are about 485 species of Diospyros mostly in the tropics.

A tropical plant. It needs light. It grows on sandy soils along the seaside. It does best with a seasonal rainfall pattern with a dry season longer than the wet season.
