What it is like
A shrub. It is stout and has many branches. It grows 1 m tall. The branches have a few hairs. The leaves are alternate and 7-15 mm long by 5-7 mm wide. There are fine teeth along the edge. The fruit is a capsule 2 mm across.
There are about 170 Gaultheria species.
