What it is like

A shrub or small tree. It can grow 20 m tall. Young branches have a brown hairy covering. The leaves are narrowly oval and 2-7 cm long by 1-3 cm wide. The fruit are fleshy and brown. They are oval and 7-10 mm long by 6 mm wide.

There are over 300 Symplocos species. There are 150 in tropical America.


Where it is found

It is a tropical plant. It grows in mixed forests between 400-3,000 m above sea level in southern China. In Sichuan and Yunnan.
