What it is like
A climber. An evergreen shrub. The leaves are compound and have 5-7 leaflets like fingers on a hand. These are 3-13 cm long by 1-5 cm wide. They are leathery. The fruit are oblong and 5-9 cm long. They are purple when ripe. The seeds are 5-8 mm long by 4-5 mm wide. They are black and shiny. There are some botanical subspecies.
There were about 6 Holboellia species. They are in Asia. Also put in the family Berberidaceae.
Where it is found
It is a temperate plant. In China it grows in forest and on mountain slopes between 1,000-2,700 m altitude. It is often by streams. In XTBG Yunnan and Sichuan.
