What it is like
A tree. It grows up to 15-20 m high. The trunk is 30-70 cm across. The bark is grey. The young branches are densely covered with yellow hairs. The leaf blade in 20-25 cm long by 7-10 cm wide. There can be male flowers, female flowers and flowers of both sexes. The cup completely encloses the nut. The nut is 1.2-1.7 cm long by 2-2.3 cm wide. It has small flattened hairs.
There are about 300 Lithocarpus species.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It needs light and wet conditions. It grows in evergreen forests below 700 m altitude. It is usually at the edge of the forest.
