What it is like

A herb. The leaves reach 40 cm long. The plant has a long underground stem or rhizome. This has fibrous leaf bases. The root is 4 cm across. The flowering stalks are 25 cm high. The flowers are large and 2.5 cm across. They are yellow.

There are about 100-150 Hypoxis species. There are 5-10 species in tropical America.
