What it is like

A shrub. It grows 1-1.5 m high. The branches have notches along them and thorns in pairs. These can be straight or slightly curved. The leaves are compound with 3-5 small leaflets. They are dark green on the upper surface and whitish-blue underneath. The flowers usually occur singly. The fruit are oval and red and 1.5-2 cm long.

The fruit contain high levels of vitamin C.


Where it is found

In Kazakhstan it grows on stony slopes and near the foot of mountains. It can grow with low rainfall.
