What it is like
A ground orchid. Plants can be 10-45 cm high. The leaves at the base are oval or sword shaped. The stem leaves are more narrow. The flower cluster is loose with 3-8 flowers. Each flower is about 2.5 cm wide. The lip looks like a wasp. It is 11-14 mm long and purplish-brown with a broad yellow edge.
There are about 140 Ophrys species.
Where it is found
It grows in grassy and stony wasteland. It is often on slightly acidic soils. It grows from sea level to 1200 m altitude.
