What it is like

A solitary palm. It grows 12 m tall. The trunk is 15 cm across. The trunk is grey and has close rings. A few leaf bases with many matted fibres stay on the plant just below the leaves. There are about 15 leaves. The leaves are arranged like fingers on a hand. The leaf blade is mid green above and lighter below. The leaf blade is about 1 m wide and long. The leaf segments are folded. The leaf stalk is about 1.5 m long and 3.5 cm wide. The flower develops amongst the leaves. It is about 1.4 m long and has 3 sets of branches. It tends to hang down. The flowers are without stalks and in groups of 3. The petals ate fleshy. The fruit is round and 3.5 cm across. There are 3 sections in the ovary. Possibly now Saribus jeanneneyi (Becc.) Bacon & W. J. Baker

There is only one Pritchardiopsis species. This is an endangered species.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows as an understorey plant in wet forest at 250 m altitude in New Caledonia. They will grow in poor soil and with full sun and wind but do better with shade, moisture and shelter.
