What it is like

A shrub. It grows 3 m tall. It has spines. The branches end in a spine. The leaves are alternate or in groups on short shoots. The leaves are pale green underneath. They are oval and 1-3 cm long by 1 cm wide. Male and female flowers are separate. The fruit is round and black when mature. It is 3-5 mm across.


Where it is found

It is a temperate plant. In China it grows in forests near rivers and on sunny slopes between 600-2,600 m above sea level. In Sichuan and Yunnan.
