What it is like
A small tree or large shrub. It grows 6 m tall. The leaves are narrowly oval and 20 cm long by 9 cm wide. Trees are separately male and female. The flowering stalks are on the trunk. The fruit are pear shaped and berry like. It is 2.5 cm long by 1 cm wide. It is angled and can be winged. The fruit are deep red or purple-black. The flesh is acid and edible. The fruit are born on the trunk close to the ground. They are on strings.
There are about 80 Baccaurea species.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows in lowland forest up to 450 m altitude. It is recorded up to 1,250 m altitude.
