What it is like

An annual herb. It lies along the ground or can curve upwards. It is 20-80 cm tall. The stems have many branches. The leaves have short leaf stalks and are narrowly oval and 2-8 cm long by 1-2.5 cm wide. The tip narrows to a point and the base is wedge shaped. The flowers are in groups of 4-6 in spike like groups. They can be at the ends of branches or in the axils of leaves. The flowers are white. The fruit are dry, black and 3 sided. They are 2 mm long.

There are about 50 Polygonum species.


Where it is found

In Taiwan it grows in open, grassy waste places.
