What it is like
A robust ginger family herb that keeps growing from year to year. It grows 3 m tall. It has a short underground stem or rhizome. The leaves are sword shaped and 12-60 cm long by 5-10 cm wide. The fruit spike is spindle shaped and 8-13 cm long. The fruit are oval and like a berry. They are 4 cm long and 1 cm wide. The seeds are prism shaped and 2 mm long.
There are about 60 Hornstedtia species. They occur in tropical Asia.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows in forests up to 1,000 m above sea level.
