What it is like

A shrub. It grows 3 m tall. The leaves are in clusters of 4-7 at the nodes towards the ends of the branches. The leaf blade is narrowly oval and 6-9 cm long by 2-4 cm wide. The flowers are in the axils of the leaves or near the ends of the branches. The fruit have 8-10 follicles. These are 11-13 mm long by 6-7 mm wide.

There are 34 Illicium species. There are 3 species in tropical America. Also put in the family Illiciaceae.
