What it is like

A stout clumping rush. It keeps growing from year to year. It grows to 2 m high. It forms underground stems or rhizomes. The leaves are sheaths near the base. The stalks are pale green and 8 mm wide. They are smooth and shiny. They can be easily squashed. The flower heads are stalked and have many loose clusters. They are 15 cm long. They come from below the tip of the stem.

There are about 300 Juncus species.

It grows in temperate and subtropical places. It grows in wet places and ponds and ditches on sandy soil.
