What it is like

A large tree. It grows 30 m tall. It can have buttresses. The bark is smooth and grey and can have shallow cracks. The leaves are clustered near the tips of the twigs. They are arranged in spirals. The leaves are 23 cm long by 11.5 cm wide. They are broadly oval. There are 12-15 pairs of side veins. The flowers are in clusters of 3-4 in the axils of leaves. The flowers are cream. The fruit are 5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide and 1.2 cm thick. They are pointed at both ends.

Canoes are carved out of this tree.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It has been recorded in Bougainville in the rainforest at about 150 m above sea level.
