What it is like

A shrub. It can grow to 1 m tall. The leaves are arranged in spirals. They are oval and leathery and 1-3 cm long. The young leaves are red. The flowers are bell shaped and 8-12 mm long. They can be red, yellow or pink. The fruit is 8-14 mm across and red, to orange.


Where it is found

It is a tropical plant. It grows between 640-3,700 m above sea level in Hawaii. It grows on volcanic ash.
