What it is like
A herb that grows on other plants and keeps growing from year to year. It has a corm-like base and fleshy roots. It grows 10-14 cm tall. It looks like a brown cone. The leaves are 6-8 cm long by 6-8 cm wide. The flowers are in spikes 7-22 cm long by 2-3 cm across. The flowers are dark purple-red. The fruit is a capsule 8-10 mm long by 6-8 mm wide. It splits open by 2 valves.
Where it is found
It is a cool temperate plant. It grows in moist forests and up to mountain zones. In north China it grows in forests and along river sides between 1,500-1,800 m above sea level.
