What it is like

A herb with a woody rootstock. It keeps growing from year to year. It has about 1 or 2 buds that develop into shoots. It grows 30-60 cm high. There are 8-11 leaves at the base. These are opposite and 3-9 cm long by 1-3 cm wide. There are teeth or irregular lobes. There are flowering shoots with leaves along them. The are shorter and wider. The flowers are blue-purple. They are in dense groups at the ends of the stalks. The fruit is dry, narrowly oval and has a beak.

Also put in the family Dipsacaceae.
