What it is like

A fern. It has a long creeping rootstock. This is branched. It grows 10-30 cm high. The stalks are 10-30 cm long and arise in clusters from the rootstock. The leaves can be floating or under the water. The leaflets are 0.1-1 cm long by 0.1-0.5 cm wide. They are narrow with a rounded tip. The capsules are 0.45-0.55 cm long and at right angles to the stalk. They are densely hairy and have a single upper tooth. They are usually on unbranched stalks.

There are about 50-70 Marsilea species. They are mostly tropical ferns which grow in water.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows in shallow fresh water or in mud around the edges of ponds. It grows best in full fun. It can tolerate frost.
