What it is like
A tree. It grows 4-6 m tall. The crown is round and dense. The trunk is short and 15-25 cm across. The bark is smooth and brown with lighter spots. It flakes off in thin pieces. The fruit is a round berry and red. It has 1-3 seeds.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows on slopes in humid forests in mountain areas in Brazil. They are best in deep well-watered soils.

How it is grown
Plants are grown from seeds. The seeds are collected from ripe fruit that are shaken from the trees onto canvas. These are then placed into plastic bags to partly decompose and the seeds washed out under running water. Seeds need to be planted fresh preferably in light shade. Seedlings emerge in 40-50 days.
