What it is like

A bulb plant. The bulb is oval. It is 2-3.5 cm across. The scales are white. The stem can be tinged with purple near the base. The stem is 30-50 cm high. The leaves are scattered and narrow. They are 3-7 cm long by 2-10 mm wide. The flowers occur as 1-5 together. They are erect. The flowers are deep red and can have spots. The fruit is a capsule which is oblong. It is 3-3.5 cm long by 2.2 cm wide. Some varieties occur.

There are about 100 Lilium species.


Where it is found

It is a temperate plant. It grows in moist places in the forest and sunny grasslands from 300-2200 m altitude in N China. I Yunnan.

The bulb is edible. It is also used in medicine. (The unspotted variety is eaten)
