What it is like

A tree. It grows 35 m high. It has buttresses. The flowers are in the axils of leaves or at the ends of branches. The fruit is a capsule with a lid that lifts off. It is a flattened round shape 16 cm long and 20 cm wide. It is woody and very thick. The lid is 9 cm across. There are only a few seeds that are like nuts. They are 3 sided. The pulp of the fruit is edible. The nuts are edible. The stalk attaching the seeds is edible.

There are 26-50 Lecythis species.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows in rainforest and along rivers a well as on slopes and bauxite plateaux.
