What it is like
A small herb with smooth stems which lie along the ground. They are 10-30 cm high and hollow. They form roots at the nodes. Flowers are yellow or red. They have deep red or purple spots.
There are 150 Mimulus species. It has also been put in the family Scrophulariaceae.
Where it is found
It is a warm temperate plant. It grows in ditches and moist places. It is naturalised in many parts of the world. In Argentina it grows from sea level to 3,700 m above sea level. It suits hardiness zones 7-10.
