What it is like

A small evergreen tree. It grows 4-10 m high. The leaves and branches are hairy. The leaves are rough to touch. They are oval and 10-15 cm long by 4-8 cm wide. They taper to the tip and have a rounded base. There are teeth along the edge. The flowers are greenish-yellow.

They have also been put in the families Tiliaceae and Sparrmanniaceae.


Where it is found

It is native to the hillsides of southern China. In Yunnan.

The young leafy branches are used as a tea substitute. The ripe fruit are eaten raw.
