What it is like

A twining creeper or vine. The root tuber is 50-60 cm across. The stem is 8 cm across. The leaves are arranged in spirals. They are simple and entire. They are oval and 10-19 cm long by 3-10 cm wide. The base is rounded or slightly wedge shaped. Flowers are of separate sexes. The male flowering shoot has many small flower heads. The fruit is made up of 3 fleshy fruit 2 cm by 2.5 cm. They are orange and shiny.

Several alkaloids have been isolated from the plant.
