What it is like
A tangled shrub. It grows 1-2 m high and spreads 1-2.5 m wide. There are many branches. They are slender and spreading. They are usually without leaves and are grey-green. The small branches are short and tangled and usually end in a spine. The leaves are 1.5-7 cm long by 0.2-1 cm wide. They are narrowly oval and grey-green. The flowers are 0.6 cm across and whitish-yellow. They occur in small clusters. The nuts are 0.5 cm long. They are top-shaped and brown.
There are about 20 Muehlenbeckia species.

It grows near swamps. It is hardy to frosts and can withstand dry periods.
