What it is like

A spiny shrub. It has many branches. It grows to about 1 m tall. The branches have grooves. They are shiny dark red. The leaves are 1-2 cm long. They are oval with indents along the edge. The flowers are yellow and occur singly on a slender stalk. The fruit are red.

There are about 450-500 Berberis species.


Where it is found

It is a temperate plant. It grows in eastern Nepal at 3000-3600 m altitude. It forms thickets in open places.
