What it is like

An orchid. It is 15-50 cm high. It carries 2-10 flowers. Each flower is 2.5-3 cm across. The lip has silky hairs. It is bent forward. The flowers are velvety dark brown.

There are about 140 Ophrys species.


Where it is found

It grows on calcareous soils of grassland and scrubland. It can also be in light coniferous forest. It occurs between sea level to 1400 m altitude.
