What it is like
An erect herb. It grows 40-70 cm high and spreads 60 cm wide. It keeps growing from year to year from a stout rootstock. The leaves are narrowly sword shaped and pale green. They are 20-40 cm long. The flowers are violet-blue. They are in dense clusters in the axils of leaves.
There are about 400 Gentiana species. The roots are used in medicine.
