What it is like
A small tree. It grows 6-12 m tall. It is spiny when young. It can be a climbing shrub. The leaves are 7-15 cm long by 3-7 cm wide. They are simple and alternate. They are broadly oval have an abrupt tip. The flowers are 1-3 cm across and pale yellow. They are in short branched clusters of 3-17 flowers. The fruit are 1-2 cm across. They are red but turn black. There is a stone with one seed.
There are 17-20 Alangium species. Some put these in the family Cornaceae and also the family Alangiaceae.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It occurs in the Western Ghats in India.
