What it is like
A tree. It keeps its leaves throughout the year. The leaves are broadly oval and 14-24 cm long by 5-8 cm wide. The base is rounded and it tapers to the tip. The seeds are oval and 10 mm long. They are in a capsule.
There are about 120 Castanopsis species. Many have edible nuts.
Where it is found
A subtropical plant. It grows at about 1,200 m above sea level.
