What it is like

A succulent herb or shrub. It grows 2 m tall. It has a tuberous root 5 cm across. The leaves are arranged in rings of 3. These occur at each node but can be condensed to look like a ring of 9. The flowers are pale yellow.

It is also placed in the Asclepiadaceae and the Periplocaceae. There is only one Eschnolepis species.
