What it is like
A tree. It grows 20 m tall. The leaves are narrowly oval and 3-35 cm long by 1.5-14 cm wide. The flowering groups are 3-13 cm long. The flowers are 2.5-3.5 mm long. The fruit is round or oblong. It is 2.2 cm long by 1.5 cm wide. The outside skin is green with brown hairs. The flesh is sweet and edible. It contains a hard covering over the seeds. This is oblong and 2 cm long by 0.7 cm wide.
There are about 8 Buchenavia species.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows in the rainforest and in forest near rivers.
