What it is like

A shrub. It grows 2 m or more tall. The leaves are in clusters of 3-8 at the nodes. The leaf blades are narrowly oval and 5-12 cm long by 1-2 cm wide. The fruit have 7-8 or more follicles that are 9-15 mm long by 4 mm wide and 2-3 mm thick. The seeds are 4-5 mm long by 3 mm wide.

There are 34 Illicium species. There are 3 species in tropical America. Also put in the family Illiciaceae.


Where it is found

It is a tropical plant. It grows along river banks and wet slopes between 400-1,000 m above sea level.
