What it is like

A tree. It grows 9-16 m tall. It loses its leaves during the year. The branches are reddish-brown. The leaves are oval and 5-11 cm long by 3-4 cm wide. There are rounded teeth along the edge. Male and female flowers are separate. The fruit are green when ripe. They are 1-2 cm across.

There are about 400 Ilex species.


Where it is found

It is a subtropical plant. It grows in sparse forests between 500-3,000 m above sea level in southern China. In Yunnan.
