What it is like

A lily-like plant. It grows 15-35 cm high. The corms are large and 3-10 cm below the soil surface. The leaves are 15-35 cm long by 0.15-0.4 cm wide. They are flat and twisted. They are dark green and have a few hairs. The flowers are 3.5 cm across and yellow inside. They are greenish-yellow outside. There are 1-4 flowers on each stem. These flowering stems are 3-25 cm long. The fruit are capsules which are 0.5-1.5 cm long. The seeds are dark brown.

There are about 100-150 Hypoxis species. There are 5-10 species in tropical America.

It grows in inland regions in Australia. They grow in moist grassland. It suits subtropical and temperate regions.
