What it is like

A plant that grows as a parasite attached to other plants. It is not green - not having any chlorophyll or leaves. It looks like a fungus. It grows on the roots of trees especially Acacias. The flowers are the only part visible above the ground the the fruti is formed underground. The fruit is 10-15 cm across.

Also put in the family Hydnoraceae.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows in the almost arid lowland tropics. It grows below 500 m above sea level.

How it is used for food

The fruit has a pleasant flavour and is eaten. The white pulp has a sour taste.
