What it is like

A robust climber. It grows 10-20 m high. The stems become woody and up to 10 cm across. Young growth has rusty hairs. The leaves are 8-12 cm long by 4-7 cm wide. They are oval. They are dark green above and hairy underneath. They taper to the tip. The flower groups occur at the ends of branches or in the axils of upper leaves. The flowers are 1.5 cm across. They are dull brownish-green. They have a strong scent. The flowers are thick and fleshy. The fruit occur in a cluster. There are 15-40 fruit in a group. These are 1 cm across and orange to red. The fruit stalks are 1-1.5 cm long.

There are 3-4 Melodorum species.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It suits tropical and subtropical locations. They grow in rainforests in NE Queensland in Australia. It needs a well drained soil and a sunny position.
