What it is like
A clumping palm. It grows up to 1-3 m tall. The leaf shape varies. Young leaves are bright red as they emerge. The seeds are round and 4-8 mm across.
There are 26 Calyptrocalyx species with about 25 in New Guinea.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. Cairns Botanical Gardens. It grows in tropical rainforest. It needs a warm, sheltered, moist site. It suits a shady location. It grows between 100-1,200 m above sea level in New Guinea. It needs a hardiness zone of 11-12. In Townsville Palmetum.
