What it is like

An evergreen shrub or tree. It grows 5-12 m tall. The bark is rough and grey. Young branches are hairy. The leaves are narrowly oval and 8-14 cm long by 4-6 cm wide. They are pale green underneath. The flowering heads are 1.1 cm across and have 60-70 flowers. The fruit are compound and up to 1.8 cm across.

There are about 45 Cornus species.


Where it is found

Temperate to Subtropical. It grows in forests and valleys in southern China between 200-1,100 m above sea level.
