What it is like

A shrub which keeps growing from year to year. The stems are dark purple. It is 8-28 cm tall. It is hairy. The leaf stalk is 0.4-1.4 cm long. The leaf blade is 0.8-2.6 cm long by 0.8-2.3 cm wide. The edges of the leaf are uneven. The flowers are at the ends of the branches. The flower stalks are 2-8 cm long. The flowers are purple. The nutlets are dark brown.

There are about 350 Scutellaria species.


Where it is found

A temperate plant. It grows on hillsides and grasslands in open places to 1500 m altitude in China. It suits hardiness zones 5-9.
