What it is like

A small herb. It has 3-4 stems. They branch from the base and grow close to the ground. The stems are grey and have short hairs. The leaves are compound and hairy. There are 3-4 leaflets and these vary in length. The flowers are small, yellow and pea like. The fruit are brown pods. They are long, narrow and cylinder shaped.

There are about 100 Lotus species.


Where it is found

A Mediterranean plant. It can tolerate salt. It grows in sandy soils.
