What it is like

A tree. It grows 20 m tall. The trunk is 60 cm across. The crown is round and the branches are drooping. The bark is black and rough. It cracks and peels. The leaves are dark green and 5-13 cm long by 3-8 cm wide. They are broadly sword shaped. The flowers are white in the axils of the upper leaves. The male flowers are in clusters and the famle flowers occur singly. The fruit are small and yellow or purple. There are 6-8 seeds.

There are about 300 Garcinia species.

A tropical plant. It is an understorey plant in the rainforest.
