What it is like

A herb that keeps growing from year to year. It has a creeping underground stem or rhizome. This is 3-10 mm thick. The leaves are alternate and almost without a leaf stalk. They are oval and 3-8 cm long by 1-4 cm wide. There are 1-2 flowers in a group. They are yellowish-green.

It is a temperate plant. It grows in central and western China in the shade of forest along valleys. It grows between 1,300-1,700 m altitude. In Sichuan and Yunnan.
