What it is like
A ginger family herb. It has a rhizome and keeps growing from year to year. The leafy shoots are 1 m long. The leaves are sword shaped and 10-30 cm long by 4-6 cm wide. The flowers are small and yellow. They are in thin clusters along the stem. The fruit is a smooth capsule.

It is a tropical and subtropical plant. It grows between 600-1,900 m above sea level.
